The shortest river on Iceland which appeared first only in 1934-1935 because of melting of the Icelandic glaciers. The lake grew from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 18 km² today. The lake is filled with icebergs calving off the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and it is deep, 200m at the least.
