Visiting Kerið volcanic crater lake, iceland

Visiting the beautiful Kerið volcanic crater lake, Iceland. I just read that authorities have closed off the area and now charge an entrance fee to protect the area as it was getting crowded with tourists. I’m all in favour of conservation, but somehow I think none of the tourists will skip a visit. Would it stop the bus loads of tourists?
A tiny voice whispers in my ear that it does sound like an excuse to milk the tourists to compensate the money Iceland had to pay to foreign savers for the Iceland bank crash and preservation is only an excuse 🙂
